Walker Fox Hound Mix

FROM HER FOSTER MOM: Saying Katie is a wonderful dog is an understatement. Not only is she wonderful, she is sweet, obedient, snuggly, friendly, and SMART! She has blossomed amazingly from the day that I got her. When she first arrived, she was extremely friendly and calm, but was nervous, didn?t want to eat, was very skinny, and needed to be close to me at all times. By the second day, she was a complete turn-around, and every day she continues to amaze me with her progress and new things she learns., Her only flaws are a few behavioral issues that can definitely be changed. We?ve been working on them at home and she?s doing very well. The first is jumping up on people. She doesn?t put her full weight on you, but it?s still something she?s learning she can?t do, especially with little kids. The second is having an obsession with being on the furniture. She knows now she isn?t supposed to be on the furniture, so she just sits and begs to be let up. If you aren?t paying attention, she will be very sneaky and squirm up without you noticing. There have been many times I?ve woken up in the night with her next to me and I never even noticed her jumping up on the bed. She has her own bed, and now is very good about staying in it since I bought her her own blankie. She will sleep on it, but will get up and whine at you until you cover her up for the night and turn off the light. I personally don?t mind her being on the furniture, but didn?t want to teach her it was okay in case her future family doesn?t want her up on it., She is mostly potty-trained, but has had 3 accidents in the house since she?s been here (a week). However, I?ve noticed that all the times were by the back door (which was open), pee only, and when it was dark out. I?m thinking she is nervous about going outside after dark with the neighbor dogs barking. During the day she likes to go in and out as she pleases., Her favorite toy is a tennis ball. She loves to bat at it with her feet and has recently learned to fetch. She will spend hours outside playing and lounging around as long as you are with her. She also loves to play chase and likes me to chase her around the house. She loves our ?bedbug? game where she lays on the floor and I throw a blanket over her. She likes to wrestle and roll around until she gets out from under it., She is excellent on a leash and will walk right next to you. She does occasionally pull when she sees a person (she?s very social) but heels nicely the rest of the time. She also knows sit and is used to being made to sit when she eats and when someone comes to the door. I also taught her to ?shake with her paw? in under ten minutes (so smart!), and she?s very eager to show anyone who asks., I have not had her around other dogs since she has kennel cough and has not had her rabies shot yet, but was told she is good with them. She doesn?t react to the neighbor dogs barking at her through the fence, and wags her tail if she sees one across the street while we are walking. I am also uncertain about cats, but she does see a lot of them when we walk and does not try to chase them. Her reaction is about the same with dogs: an interested look and wag of the tail. If she was in a house with one, she may try to chase it if it ran, but I seriously doubt she would intentionally hurt it. She is fine with my 2 guinea pigs and has no drive to get to them. She sniffs at them when they are out, and watches them in their cage when I feed them, but her reaction to them is friendly and not overly excited., She has not been around young children yet, but her first encounter will be this Friday when I watch my friend?s two year old boy. I?m assuming she will be fine (aside from the ?dangerous? wagging long tail and the wiggles she has) but will update this if she has issues with small kids. I?m guessing a house with kids over 5 might be best though, since kids younger than that are right at her height and apt to be smacked in the face with her tail or accidentally smacked with her paw when she?s playing., She is scheduled to be spayed and receive her rabies shot at the end of the month. Her kennel cough is getting better and I just received some antibiotics for it, so she should have a clean bill of health in a few weeks. She also seems to be gaining some weight, but still has a long way to go until her hip bones and ribcage aren?t protruding so much. J
